The Fifth Sunday of Lent – Sunday 29th March 2020

This Sunday see our Benefice service on our website and please join us  www.whitewaterchurches.co.uk

We are keeping to Government and Church of England guidance
& therefore avoiding social contact.

There are no public services in our churches during this season.

We cannot open for prayer, but please get in touch if you would like to join a prayer group
or ask for prayer, which are bringing us much comfort and joy!

Collect for this Sunday

Gracious Father, you gave up your Son out of love for the world: lead us to ponder the mysteries of his passion, that we may know eternal peace through the shedding of our Saviour’s blood, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Current notes from Whitewater Benefice

Just as the Archbishops have reminded us, clergy and lay ministers will continue to offer prayers in their homes at the heart of our communities.  This daily rhythm of prayer, which is at the heart of a ministry of service goes on, and from wherever we are we can join the constant prayer of the Church, for the world, for others, and for ourselves. There are prayers in this pewsheet for you to use at home. Many churches will be live streaming prayers, worship and preaching this Sunday. There is a growing resource of materials for prayer at home. We also have some ‘WhatsApp’ prayer groups. Please get in touch if you would like to be part of this praying community, or if you have other ideas that you would like to share. Contact Carol-Anne Morris via the Benefice office email.

Whilst the churches are closed, please do not go into our churches, even if you are a key-holder, but speak to Marion or Shona if there is something you need. Thank you.

OUR BENEFICE MAGAZINE: has been printed for April, and will be available for you to pick up your own copy from St John’s Hook Porch, Rotherwick Church Porch, and other venues. We will then take a pause and plan for our next issue to be in September.

We shall not be able to hold weddings, baptisms, or funerals in church for the time being. Future weddings may need to conducted by Common Licence. Speak to Marion or Shona.

APCMS: We shall not be able to have our Annual Parochial Church Meetings (APCMs) in April as previously planned. Future pewsheets will keep you up to date with our news.

Please let us know if we can help you.

Former guests who have been through the half-way houses and who are now re-establishing a life for themselves are helping getting food to those in need, including those on the streets, they still have contact and know where they are likely to be sheltering. Health provision is still available at the Crown Heights pharmacy which is important for those who are on programmes to combat addiction. There are high stress and anxiety levels among those of the guests who have mental health issues and who had just navigated change from night shelter to half-way houses before the COVID-19 crisis struck. Kim Foster.

Keep us, dear Lord, under the shadow of your mercy. Sustain and support the anxious, be with those who care for the sick, and lift up all who are brought low; that we may find comfort knowing that nothing can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Lord Jesus Christ, you taught us to love our neighbour, and to care for those in need

as if we were caring for you. In this time of anxiety, give us strength to comfort the fearful, to tend the sick, and to assure the isolated of our love, and your love, for your name’s sake.

God of compassion, be close to those who are ill, afraid or in isolation. In their loneliness, be their consolation; in anxiety, be their hope; in their darkness, be their light; through him who suffered alone on the cross, but reigns with you in glory, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For those who are ill: Merciful God, we entrust to your tender care those who are ill or in pain, knowing that whenever danger threatens your everlasting arms are there to hold them safe. Comfort and heal them, and restore them to health & strength; in Jesus’ name. Amen.

For hospital staff and medical researchers: Gracious God, give skill, sympathy and resilience

to all who are caring for the sick, and your wisdom to those searching for a cure. Give them the personal protection they need. Strengthen them with your Spirit, that through their work many will be restored to health; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

If you purchase goods through Amazon, Hook PCC is now signed up to benefit from the Amazon Smile programme, which provides the PCC with a small amount of money every time you shop through Amazon. https://smile.amazon.co.uk/ch/1183688-0

Go to this webpage to nominate the Hook PCC as your chosen charity for Amazon Smile (alternatively search by charity number 1183688).  You then need to shop at smile.amazon.co.uk rather than the normal Amazon website to generate money for the PCC.   If you use the mobile app e.g. on your phone then you need to link that as well:

•           Go to the Amazon shopping app.  Go to the main menu = type icon, which brings up the little person icon that says eg hello username

•           Scroll down to programmes and features

•           See all programmes

•           Select Amazon smile and accept St Johns as your charity

You see at the top of the app that it’s now linked to Smile. Thank you so much. Nikki Wild.

Mel has written to us: Just to say a HUGE thank you for my lovely send off and gifts/ vouchers. I was (and still am!) very touched by everything you did. My lounge never looked so pretty with all the spring flowers. I’m still deciding how best to spend my vouchers. I loved by books and I will definitely treasure those and the sentiments they hold. You are all in my thoughts and prayers during these challenging times. Please take care. As you can imagine, it is a difficult time at the Hospice. Miss seeing you all. With my love, Mel xxx

FOOD BANK DONATIONS please continue to bring in –more important now than at any time in recent history. Items Required: UHT milk, long life fruit juice, tinned fruit.

Prayers for Today and the Coming Weeks

Let us pray for wisdom and care during this season of national concern, and for those who might be isolated at home; pray too for our medical and emergency services

Those in need of prayer: John Clements, Michael, Linda, Nicky, Luke White, Ivor Williams, David and Lynda, Lorna Nodder, Olive Cox (now in residential home), Melanie (Joyce’s niece).

Year’s Mind: Christopher Chidley (4th April).

Those who have recently died: Richard Bardwell, Margaret Sutton, Tony Hall, Ruth Foot

We love to pray for people who ask for prayer, but please do ask Marion first, so that we understand the situation, and we know that the person in need has given their permission to publish their name here. We shall continue to pray for people in our Years’ Mind for 2 years after their passing, and then request that their family confirm with us that you would like us to continueThanks so much.
