You may like to light a candle as a reminder that the love of God is like a light in our darkness.

Welcome To Worship

Welcome to our worship as we are gathered in heart and spirit if not in physical proximity with one another.  It is a reminder that the church is not the building but rather it is the people of God who are the church. As we bring ourselves to worship we remember the words of Jesus, ‘Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’

Wonderful World (image from John Paul Stanley / YoPlace.com)

Be still and rest in the peace of God.
Be strong and trust in the tranquility of God.
Be quiet and rejoice in the beauty of God.
Be open and be drawn into the depths of God.
Be courageous and set sail in the sea of God.
Be yourself and be enveloped in the heart of God,
who has made all things, loves all things,
redeems all things, today and always.
Amen

Opening Prayer

Where ocean meets shore, you are there.
Where earth meets sky, you are there.
Where day meets night, you are there.
And so we worship you, wonderful Creator God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We worship you.
Amen

Hymn

O Lord My God when I in awesome wonder
O Lord My God when I in awesome wonder (from YouTube, opens in a new tab)

Prayer of Praise

Colourful, creator God,
we give you thanks for the times
when through the beauty of creation
we have glimpsed the true nature of the Creator God;
the times when through another’s love
we have glimpsed the love of God.

Deepen our appreciation of all that is around us
and increase our sense of mutual dependence,
that we may celebrate diversity, delight in difference
and be drawn into life-giving relationships
that honour all you have made and all that we are.
Amen

Confession

The oceans cannot cry out when they are polluted, but we can.
Creator God, forgive us when we are silent.

Animals cannot protect themselves from cruelty and abuse, but we can.
Creator God, forgive us when we do nothing.

The rainforests cannot stand up to bulldozers and axes, but we can.
Creator God, forgive us when we turn away.

Forgive us, empower us, and bless us with urgency, compassion, and courage,
that those who come after us may look on your creation, see that it is good, and rejoice.
Amen

Collect

Creator God, you made the goodness of the land,
the riches of the sea and the rhythm of the seasons;
We thank you for the riches of your creation may we cherish
and respect this planet and its peoples, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Bible Reading (Genesis 1:1 - 2:3)

The beginning

1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

3And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. 4God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light ‘day’, and the darkness he called ‘night’. And there was evening, and there was morning – the first day.

6And God said, ‘Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.’ 7So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8God called the vault ‘sky’. And there was evening, and there was morning – the second day.

9And God said, ‘Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.’ And it was so. 10God called the dry ground ‘land’, and the gathered waters he called ‘seas’. And God saw that it was good.

11Then God said, ‘Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.’ And it was so. 12The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13And there was evening, and there was morning – the third day.

14And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.’ And it was so. 16God made two great lights – the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening, and there was morning – the fourth day.

20And God said, ‘Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.’ 21So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22God blessed them and said, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.’ 23And there was evening, and there was morning – the fifth day.

24And God said, ‘Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.’ And it was so. 25God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

26Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’

27So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

28God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’

29Then God said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground – everything that has the breath of life in it – I give every green plant for food.’ And it was so.

31God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning – the sixth day

2v1Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

2By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Prayers of Intercession

When winds whirl and rain clouds swirl, we celebrate you, Creator God.
We thank you for the wonders of your creation and all the blessings you have brought into out lives. The love of the people close to us, both now and those who have been with us in the past. The beauty of your creation, which we see when we open our eyes to your glory.

God of Creation, hear our prayer

In the morning light, by stars at night, we look for you, Lord of Light.
May we be guided by the Jesus Christ the Lord of Light. We pray for decisions that we have to make in our lives, be that for our jobs, in our relationships and our money, in all these decisions big and small may we guided by you.
God of Creation, hear our prayer

With oceans deep and mountains steep, we praise you, strengthening God.
We pray for world events over which we often seem to have little control. We pray for world leaders dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic and the economic fall out from it. We pray for the scientists looking for a vaccine and treatments for the disease and health care workers around the world caring for the sick. In a fast-changing world Lord God, may we be strengthened and encouraged by you.

God of Creation, hear our prayer

When peacocks strut and billy goats butt, we laugh with you, wonderful God.
Help us Lord to look after your creation, the wonder and beauty of it is all around us and yet so often we take it for granted. We often forget that we need to nurture your world and take good care of it. Help us to follow our calling of being custodians of this world and do what we can to protect your creation for future generations.

God of Creation, hear our prayer

When eagles soar and lions roar, we trust in you, awesome God.
Whatever the challenges in our lives may we know that we can rely on you Lord God to support us. If we are ill, may we rest on the certainty that you are with us, if we are worried about schools starting may we give those concerns to you, if we are worried about our jobs may we trust in you for our future, whatever our challenges Lord God may we trust in you.

With all our friends, through all life sends,
we worship you, loving God: Father, Son and Spirit.
Amen

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

Offertory

Creator God, thank you for the world that we live in, we offer now these gifts to you, knowing that all we have comes from you and praying that you can use these gifts for your glory.
Amen
