Welcome To Worship

Welcome to our worship as we are gathered in heart and spirit if not in physical proximity with one another.  It is a reminder that the church is not the building but rather it is the people of God who are the church. Today's picture is of a sunrise: the start of a new day.

The Greeting

Faithful One, whose word is life: come with saving power to free our praise, inspire our prayer and shape our lives. For the kingdom of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Confession

St Paul says ‘Be imitators of God; love as Christ loved;
do not grieve the Holy Spirit; put away all anger and bitterness, all slander and malice.’

So let us confess our sins to God, who forgives us in Christ.
For turning away from you,
and ignoring your will for our lives;
Father, forgive us:
save us and help us.

For behaving just as we wish,
without thinking of you;
Father, forgive us:
save us and help us.

For failing you by what we do,
and think and say;
Father, forgive us:
save us and help us.

For letting ourselves be drawn away from you
by temptations in the world about us;
Father, forgive us:
save us and help us.

For living as if we were ashamed
to belong to your Son;
Father, forgive us:
save us and help us.

Absolution

The almighty and merciful Lord
grant you pardon and forgiveness of all your sins,
time for amendment of life,
and the grace and strength of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Collect

Merciful God,
your Son came to save us
and bore our sins on the cross:
may we trust in your mercy
and know your love,
rejoicing in the righteousness
that is ours through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Old Testament and Gospel Readings (Genesis 1:1-5 and John 8:12)

Genesis 1: 1 - 5

1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

3And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. 4God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light ‘day’, and the darkness he called ‘night’. And there was evening, and there was morning – the first day.

John 8: 12

12When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Affirmation of Faith

We believe in God the Father,
from whom every family
in heaven and on earth is named.
We believe in God the Son,
who lives in our hearts through faith,
and fills us with his love.
We believe in God the Holy Spirit,
who strengthens us
with power from on high.
We believe in one God;
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Amen

Prayers

Prayers of Intercession

As we start our prayers, let us bring our senses to focus on the presence of God.

Dear Lord, you formed me from the dust and breathed life into us. Inspire me with the Holy Spirit that I may have a heart turned toward You and a mind open to the possibilities in the wonderful world You have created.

Help me realise how important it is to be a careful and responsible steward of the natural world which is not mine to own or exploit or destroy. Help me and the Christian community throughout the world work with scientists and campaigners to influence the leaders of our countries and of multi-national companies to make the right and courageous decisions about our world and the legacy we leave to future generations.

Give me Your love, Lord, for the whole of Creation. Amen

Dear Lord, I thank you for this amazing earth which I share with the whole community of life. I pray for forgiveness for the times I, in what I have done directly or indirectly, have not respected others, when the nations of the West have sought economic gain on a finite planet at the expense of the indigenous population. In this 400th anniversary year of the sailing of the Pilgrim Fathers to America, I am sorry for the impact on the First Nations of the continent who suffered, and still suffer, from the arrival of those who sought freedom for themselves, freedom to worship.

Help me, Lord, to live in a such a way that I respect all life.

Give me Your love, Lord, for the whole of Creation. Amen

Dear Lord, through Your creative power, humanity has become Earth’s dominant species. May I learn to use my talents wisely for the good of the whole community of life, to sustain rather than to destroy.  May I encourage my brothers and sisters in Christ to take those small steps that we each can, remembering that with You, Lord, nothing is impossible, that every small change each of us makes has its own effect and that together all our efforts can produce the change You desire from us.

Give me Your love, Lord, for the whole of Creation. Amen

As one family, we pray for those who have asked for our prayers, for those known and loved by us who are suffering, for those whom You call Your children. As we hold them in our hearts now, hold them, Lord, in your tender and loving care for ever.

Give me Your love, Lord, for the whole of Creation. Amen

Holy Spirit, you established the dance of Creation, bringing light out of darkness, hope out of despair and life out of death. Be with us now and for evermore. Amen

Merciful Father
Accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son
our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

The Peace

May the God of peace make you perfect and holy,
that you may be kept safe and blameless
in spirit, soul and body,
for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
Amen.

Reflecting on Holy Communion

Holy communion is available on Sunday night at 6pm in St John's Church, Hook.

At this time when we cannot all easily gather to share Holy Communion with one another we take some time to reflect on what it means to each of us that Jesus gave his own life that we might live life in freedom.

1 Corinthians 11: 23 - 26

23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Eternal God,
our beginning and our end,
accompany us in this day’s journey.
Dawn on our darkness,
open our eyes to praise you for your creation
and to see the work you set before us today.
Take us and use us to bring to others the new life you give
in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Offertory

Creator God, thank you for the world that we live in, we offer now these gifts to you, knowing that all we have comes from you and praying that you can use these gifts for your glory.
Amen
