Welcome To Worship

Welcome to our worship as we are gathered in heart and spirit if not in physical proximity with one another. It is a reminder that the church is not the building but rather it is the people of God who are the church.

Call to Worship

Creation eagerly yearns for the Day of the Lord
when the sea will part again,
the mountains skip like rams
and the hills like young sheep.
Come, like the earth,
tremble at the presence of the Lord in this place;
come to the one who drew forth water from the rock,
who turned flint into a flowing stream.
Come and hear truth – strange speech for our age –
come and be transformed. Come.

Creationtide prayer

Almighty God,
whose Spirit hovered over the waters bringing order out of chaos,
and whose love for all living things is everlasting:
help us to live in such a way that we care for your creation,
marvel at its beauty, and share its resources;
to the glory of your Son Jesus Christ
through whom and for whom all things were created.
Amen.

Confession

O God of freedom
You led your people of old with cloud by day and fire by night.
You parted the sea with your breath,
and saved Your people from oppression.
Free us, O God, in our own age.
Free us, O God.

Free us from
indifference in the face of poverty,
ignorance in the face of fact,
disbelief in the face of evidence before our very eyes,
deliver us good Lord,
that we may allow the earth to heal.

Lord of the living and Lord of the dead,
we are conscious of our sin.
We are weak in faith,
quarrelsome in nature
and there is no health in us.
When we deny the science of climate change, enlighten us.
When we continue to pollute our earth, convict us.
When we exploit Creation, chastise us.
When we fail to cherish the Earth, our fragile home, change us.
When we fail to love the poor and oppressed, forgive us.

Give us time, O God, even at this late hour, to change,
to turn away from destruction and back to you.

Lord, have mercy.

pause

God is the fount of all mercy
and through the life, death, and new life of Jesus Christ
has shown us how to live
calling us to renewed action and commitment.

Absolution

May you receive pardon, peace, and wisdom,
that you may use your time well,
be filled with grace, and help to renew the earth.
Amen.

Collect

Merciful Father,
teach us to be faithful in change and uncertainty,
that trusting in your word
and obeying your will,
we may enter the unfailing joy of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Prayer of Illumination

Sometimes, O God, Your Word is hard for us.
Sometimes, O God, we don’t want to hear You.
Sometimes, O God, we’d rather sing our nice hymns,
pray our comforting prayers,
and turn away from what You require.
Send Your Holy Spirit, that we may turn to You,
in Word read and proclaimed,
that we may listen, understand, change and obey. Amen

Readings

Genesis 2:1-3

1Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

2By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

John 5.1-9: The healing at the pool

1Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3Here a great number of disabled people used to lie – the blind, the lame, the paralysed. 5One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, ‘Do you want to get well?’

7‘Sir,’ the invalid replied, ‘I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.’

8Then Jesus said to him, ‘Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.’ 9At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath.

A Prayer of Declaration

We believe in God the Father,
from whom every family
in heaven and on earth is named.
We believe in God the Son,
who lives in our hearts through faith,
and fills us with his love.
We believe in God the Holy Spirit,
who strengthens us
with power from on high.
We believe in one God;
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Amen

Prayers

As we listen to the quiet music, and gathered in God’s presence let us pray.

Music: Spirit of the Living God played by Nikki Wild

Spirit of the Living God - Daniel Iverson

Prayers for the Earth based on the fifth mark of mission
To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation
and sustain and renew the life of the earth

To Strive…

God, creator of the universe,
Fill us with your love for the creation,
for the natural world around us,
for the earth from which we come
and to which we will return.
Awake in us energy to work for your world;
teach us not to squander precious resources;
let us never fall into complacency, ignorance,
or being overwhelmed by the task before us.
Help us to restore, remake, renew. Amen

To Safeguard…

Jesus, Redeemer of the World,
Remind us to consider the lost lilies,
the disappearing sparrows;
help us value habitats: seas, deserts, forests
and seek to preserve this world in its diversity.
Alert us to the cause of all living creatures
destroyed wantonly for human greed or pleasure;
Help us to value what we have left
and to learn to live without taking more than we give. Amen

Integrity of Creation…

Spirit of the Living God
At the beginning you moved over the face of the waters.
You brought life into being, the teeming life
that finds its way through earth and sea and air,
that makes its home around us, everywhere.
You know how living things flourish and grow
How they co-exist; how they feed and breed and change
Help us to understand those delicate relationships,
value them, and keep them from destruction. Amen

To Sustain…

God, of the living earth
You have called people to care for your world -
you asked Noah to save creatures from destruction.
May we now understand how to sustain your world –
Not over-fishing, not over-hunting,
Not destroying trees, precious rainforest
Not farming soil into useless dust.
Help us to find ways to use resources wisely
to find a path to good, sustainable living
in peace and harmony with creatures around us. Amen

To Renew…

Jesus, who raised the dead to life
Help us to find ways to renew
what we have broken, damaged and destroyed:
Where we have taken too much water,
polluted the air, poured plastic into the sea,
cut down the forests and soured fertile soils.
Help all those who work to find solutions to
damage and decay; give hope to those
who are today working for a greener future. Amen

Merciful Father
Accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son
our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen

The Lord's Prayer

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen

The Peace

We are the body of Christ.
In the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body.
Let us then pursue all that makes for peace and builds up our common life.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.
Amen.

Offertory

Let us consider all that God has done for you, especially as you see this in Jesus. ‘Count your blessings’ and respond with appropriate generosity from your material wealth.
Amen

Reflecting on Holy Communion

Holy communion is available on Sunday night at 6pm in St John's Church, Hook.

At this time when we cannot all easily gather to share Holy Communion with one another we take some time to reflect on what it means to each of us that Jesus gave his own life that we might live life in freedom.

1 Corinthians 11: 23 - 26

23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

O God, whose beauty is beyond our imagining
and whose power we cannot comprehend:
show us your glory as far as we can grasp it,
and shield us from knowing more than we can bear
until we may look upon you without fear;
through Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Amen

Blessing

May the Holy Spirit who gives gifts to all people,
flood your hearts with thanksgiving to God.
And the blessing of God Almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always.  Amen

Tend the earth, care for God’s good creation,
and bring forth the fruits of righteousness.
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ. Amen.
