Tearfund Inspired Individuals

As a Christian charity, Tearfund believes that everyone has a God-given potential to create change. St John’s Hook was proud to support this charity in 2018 through Toilet Twinning, and in 2020 we are once again helping them in their aim of creating change in the places of greatest need.

For over 50 years, Tearfund has been working to end poverty and to provide relief to disadvantaged communities when disaster strikes. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, their work has never been more important.

Operating through local medical and care agencies, Tearfund is responding to the needs of people who have been forcibly displaced from their homes due to conflict, violence and persecution and who now find themselves vulnerable to the coronavirus.  In the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh, in refugee camps in Colombia, home to Venezuelans fleeing political and economic crisis, and in Lebanon where there are 1.5 million refugees from Syria, Tearfund is providing access to clean water and hygiene kits, delivering food and distributing materials to raise awareness about how to prevent the spread of the virus.

Through their Inspired Individuals programme, Tearfund identifies, develops, and connects Christian leaders from around the world who are changemakers in their communities. In their lives, they may have experienced the depths of poverty, hardship, violence, and loss but with God’s help, they have risen above pain and despair to become agents of transformation of the future. Inspired Individuals are involved in a wide range of pioneering work, including standing up to corruption, ending trafficking and prostitution, peace-making between divided peoples and offering fresh hope to street children.

Tearfund’s goal is to help equip and connect these inspiring people to make their already-remarkable ministries as effective as possible, and St John’s Hook is proud to support Tearfund in this work.

Tamam's Story

In September 2020, we had a visit from Andrew Bryce.  Andrew was talking to us based on the latest Tearfund campaign - Home Is - which supports refugees, and the focus in particular is those in Lebanon who have fled from Syria. Syria: Home is where the war is - Tearfund

These are the videos of Andrew's talk:

This is Tamam's story

This is the final part of Andrew's talk

We would like to thank Andrew for joining us. It was eye opening to recognise the plight of those who have suffered the deprivation of what we sometimes overlook and take for granted.
