Music

St John’s Church, Hook, is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music and has an active robed choir of around 20 singers.

The choir consist of two sections, the Juniors and Seniors (adults), who normally sing together to enhance worship at the 10 am Services on three Sundays of the month (2nd, 3rd and 4th) and at occasional other services, notably the Christmas Carol Service.Music from a variety of styles is sung, from plainsong through to modern worship music, accompanied and unaccompanied, with two Sundays each month having a sung service setting.

Those choir members who wish to do so have an opportunity to gain awards from the Royal School of Church Music awards schemes.  There is also the possibility of singing at weddings or funerals in the parishes, for which a small fee is paid.

Choir practice is Friday evenings from 7.15pm – 8.15pm for the juniors, and 7.45pm – 9pm for the adults (usually followed by socialising together!).  New junior members should be aged at least 7 (both boys and girls) and keen to learn – no prior musical experience is required.  Adults with or without prior experience are also always welcome to come to a rehearsal to see if they would like to join.  Interested singers (or their parents) should speak to the Director of Music, Stephen Davies, who can be found at the organ bench on Sundays.
